If you are new to skiing you really don’t need poles at all. They will only help you push yourself through the lift line. In fact, starting with poles can often teach bad habits of form, like dropping your arms, dragging them or trying to use them to stop.

Once you’re skiing intermediate terrain you’ll want poles. You’ll want a pole that is the right length, which means when you hold the tip of the pole in your hand and rest the handle on the ground, your arm is bent 90-degrees at the elbow.

Those little round things are called baskets and come in lots of sizes and shapes. Downhill ski poles have smaller baskets than cross-country ski poles, so make sure you’r buying downhill ski poles.

    Most important, have fun!

I would go with one of the scott racing poles. They are very strong and if you fall on them they won’t break.
